2 Corinthians 9–10: Word & Deed

Read the Bible in 2011 ◊ Week 20: Sunday

Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.
2 Corinthians 10:11

Sunday’s Bible reading is 2 Corinthians 9–10. In chapter 9 Paul continues to encourage and exhort the Corinthians to put together their previously promised gift. In chapter 10, after stating that he urges them by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, he again must remind the Corinthians of his proven character. In this context he discusses spiritual warfare (see 10:3–6 on taking every thought captive to Christ), his authority and his personal authenticity—he is no hypocrite—he doesn’t write one thing and then do another.

He closes chapter 10 with this reminder:

“For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.”
2 Corinthians 10:18

The Corinthian church have promised a gift, but they have yet to follow through. Paul, on the other hand, is a man whose sincerity of his word is proven time and time again by the authenticity of his deed. We need to imitate Paul, and we also need to guard ourselves from those whose words may be impressive, but whose deeds reveal who they really are.
